The main purpose in creating this web site is to provide easy-to-understand information about the genetic disorder known as Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3 or Machado-Joseph Disease.

This site was created as a project for my Biology 498: Library Research course at the University of Washington. However, I knew for certain that my efforts would become a personal feat as well as an academic achievement for me.

I was diagnosed with SCA3 in April of 2003. In doing personal research on the internet on SCA3, I found it extremely difficult to find substantial information on the disease that spoke in terms that I, a non-science oriented person, could understand. It became a daunting task to weed through much of the medical jargon and to gain a better understanding of the disease that has afflicted my family and me.

In a conversation with my biology instructor, Linda Martin-Morris, I realized that there might be others out there who experience the same frustration when looking up SCA3 on the web. This motivated me to create something non-intimidating that would be easy to navigate and comprehensible for the general public and for folks who suffer from the disease as well.

On this site, I offer information on SCA3 and links to various organizations and other informative web pages. Feel free to take a look around and let me know your thoughts by signing my guestbook page!
