General Symptoms:

Symptoms may vary from person to person.

  • awkward body movements

  • rigidity/stiffness

  • double vision

  • weakness in arms and legs

  • slurring of speech

  • difficulty swallowing

  • spasticity (continuous, uncontrollable muscle contractions)

  • staggering gait/walk (often mistaken for drunkenness)

  • frequent urination

  • eyes have "bulging" appearance

  • involuntary eye movements

  • dystonia (arms, legs, trunk, eyes and neck)

  • exaggerated reflexes

  • muscle twitching and numbness, tingling, cramps/pain in the hands, feet, and limbs.

There is evidence of some impairment of emotional and executive functioning. However, dementia is not a symptom of SCA3. Therefore, such things as memory, concentration, judgment, and general cognitive abilities are not impacted by the disease.
